Anatomy Of A (First) Business Trip

Written contemporaneously, posted subsequently.

Husband just got back from his very first business trip… and our first time apart since Monkey was born! Here's about how it went for me:

Before the trip:

Alternate between good and bad anxiety. The bad is obvious—this is the longest we'll have been apart since we've been married, and he'll even be a couple timezones away. There are supposed to be storms this week where he's going, hopefully his flights won't be too delayed. The good is a little different—this is my chance to prove that I can get and keep the house clean. I'm going to instate some rules for myself so that I have time to get things done, especially since I'm planning a dinner party a few days after he gets back. My rules are: No adult TV until 9:30; If I'm not going to touch it (dishes, computer, coat, etc.) for another 30 minutes, it gets put away (EVEN IF in the middle of watching TV or something!).

Here's what I'm planning to accomplish with all my extra free time… get ready to laugh at me!

  • Get the front room company-ready (dust if I'm feeling ambitious!)
  • Get front room to the point where Monkey can wander around?
  • Get the kitchen company-ready
  • Get the bathroom company-ready
  • Stay on top of Monkey messes—especially high chair and high chair floor
  • Get bedroom Roomba-ready and run the Roomba (figure out how to empty Roomba?!)
  • Fold and hang all laundry that Husband didn't get to before he left (We're all sick… it means things get left behind) (Oh, did I forget to mention that part? Everyone is sick.)
  • 1-2 loads of laundry if needed
  • Bake cookies?
  • Chop veggies for Curry Party
  • Bake cake for neighbors?
  • Attack cat-mess in bathroom (that's where the catbox is)
  • Oh yeah, and NOT GO INSANE.

So there's what I've got pre-trip. I won't edit anything in different sections for anything but spelling and grammar… keep myself accountable!

First Day: Sunday

Didn't do too bad, actually… We had a relapse of the Binky Wars (but I won). I washed and dried 4 loads of laundry, put away a load of baby laundry, and hung/folded/put away the load that was left. Except, I realized after I put the Monkey down that all I consumed today was a fiber bar before church, 160mg of caffeine (mmmmm), and a handful of nuts. OOPS. Maybe I need to put "NOTE TO SELF: MUST EAT." on my list. Had some pasta with red sauce (not a favorite of Husband's, so I don't eat it that often), except when I was getting out the pasta, the big glass jar I keep it in slid on the floor and broke into eight million little pieces. FAIL. Texted with Husband a bit (His flight was delayed 3 hours! Gross!). Don't miss him yet, but I haven't gone to bed yet, so…

Summary:

  • No adult TV before 9:30: check
  • Put away things that won't be touched within 30 minutes: eh… 50% success?
  • Get the front room company-ready (dust if I'm feeling ambitious!)
  • Get front room to the point where Monkey can wander around?
  • Get the kitchen company-ready
  • Get the bathroom company-ready
  • Stay on top of Monkey messes—especially high chair and high chair floor
  • Get bedroom Roomba-ready and run the Roomba (figure out how to empty Roomba?!)Swept instead.
  • Fold and hang all laundry that Husband didn't get to before he left (We're all sick… it means things get left behind) (Oh, did I forget to mention that part? Everyone is sick.)
  • 1-2 loads of laundry if neededBut there will be more…
  • Bake cookies?
  • Chop veggies for Curry Party
  • Bake cake for neighbors?
  • Attack cat-mess in bathroom (that's where the catbox is)

Second Day: Monday

I had a hard time getting to sleep last night, even after Husband texted to say that they landed. Ended up falling asleep at around 2:30… yuck! The house felt empty as I was getting ready for work this morning… I've had the experience before, though, because occasionally Husband will head out early, and be gone very soon after I get up. It was kinda weird being at work and knowing that he wasn't in the same timezone. We texted a few times during the day, which is a little more than usual, and then after work I just hung out at my friend's house (and she fed me bacon-wrapped filet mignon and some kind of delicious apple tart thing—go ahead and be jealous!) until Monkey's bedtime. Husband called when he was headed to bed, we chatted for about 10 minutes (and he sounded terribly sick… poor guy), and then I put Monkey down without a peep (because we ended up being out an hour past his bedtime… Shhh!). Chored it up for a while, then chored it up while watching TV, and now I'm headed outside to see if I can see any meteors. Hopefully I will be asleep by 1 tonight… not the best goal, but better than last night.

Summary:

  • No adult TV before 9:30: check
  • Put away things that won't be touched within 30 minutes: check!(Though I still have a pile to take out to the garage…)
  • Get the front room company-ready (dust if I'm feeling ambitious!)(Front room is close-ish. I'll need to sweep tomorrow and Saturday, and there's the playpen and garage-pile. But I dusted while watching TV! Listen closely… That thump sound you just heard was the EclecticMamma's Mamma falling over from shock!)
  • Get front room to the point where Monkey can wander around?
  • Get the kitchen company-ready
  • Get the bathroom company-ready(Well, I need to have the Roomba run in the part of the bathroom opposite the catbox. But I think we'll do a sweep/Roomba run Saturday morning.)
  • Stay on top of Monkey messes—especially high chair and high chair floor
  • Take apart and scrub/scrape high chair.

Third Day: Tuesday

Missing Husband. He comes home tomorrow, but it'll be tomorrow evening and he'll be home laaaate. I took Monkey to Walmart after I picked him up so we could get some stuff I need to making treats, but when I got home I realized I don't have everything I need… So treats get pushed off again. I did buy the meat, though, so I cut up the meat tonight and will do treats tomorrow.

Summary:

  • No adult TV before 9:30: check
  • Put away things that won't be touched within 30 minutes: check
  • Get the front room company-ready (dust if I'm feeling ambitious!)
  • Get front room to the point where Monkey can wander around
  • Get the kitchen company-ready
  • Get the bathroom company-ready
  • Stay on top of Monkey messes—especially high chair and high chair floor
  • Take apart and scrub/scrape high chair.

The Last Day: Wednesday

My cold felt a lot better until about 1, when I started feeling like I had a fever. Left work a bit early. Wanted Husband to be home. Fabulous SIL A and BIL K came over to watch Monkey while I slept. Did nothing else. But at least the house still looks decent from my efforts earlier in the week… There's something to be said for not procrastinating, after all!

So I suppose the best way to survive a business trip is to STAY BUSY. I think that's why I was so intent on getting things done—to distract myself. It didn't end up being too bad… in fact, I enjoyed my evenings until my cold came back with a butt-kicking vengeance and I could barely feed myself. Which is a good thing (the enjoyment, not the cold) because Husband will have other trips in the future.
